ommkarja turned 21 yesterday. For her birthday, and as a Finals stress reliever, I baked. I have a lot of work but it doesn't feel like a lot of work. Our landlady woke me up this morning to show our (not yet cleaned) apartment - scary. And we were going to clean Tuesday, because then I will be done.

  • Brownies
  • Strawberry-Rhubarb pie (see this)
  • ... and of course, Apple Pie.

  • Amusing how lange stayed until I brought the Apple pie, ate it, and ran off. I guess people like it or something. The SRP was mostly successful - it was a first attempt, and convenient that they had bought bowls. The brownies were successful with ice cream, but just about completely the opposite consistency that I was expecting - dense.

I'm not sure I'm parsing it correctly. Were the brownies suppose to be dense, or fluffy? I've never actually had a rhubarb based pie. Maybe someday.

Do you still have that recipe for that glaze or sauce you made to go on the pineapple and bananas that one time? I seem to recall it went well with vanilla ice cream too.

They were fairly dense. Thin. Etc. I'm used to a more substantial brownie, which leads me to believe I was short not on chocolate but on the other elements that make a brownie.

I'm sure I have the recipe somewhere. That was good. Hopefully I'll have more time to cook in the future. It is very soothing for me.

Yeah, maybe you didn't use enough baking powder.

Indeed. I sometimes wonder whether I should give up this whole computer science thing and cook.

Indeed. I continue to think that maybe after my time with seth I'll just go home and do something different.

Not necessarily a bad plan. My sister knows this guy who graduated from Caltech that decided to go to a culinary school in France before he goes to Princeton for grad school. I expect for now that I will continue to pursue it only at an amatuer level, since I have assured "employment" for the time being. Though I am hopeful that I may be able to broaden my target audience beyond myself in the near future.

Actually, the Transient Culinary Institute has a nice ring to it.

So have I mentioned we're all to apply pressure to maryneedssleep to go with Transient Mead for her award-winning meadry?

And yes, TCI does have a nice ring. Perhaps it should be a bit more broad... Transient Chemical Institute. Cause I'm thinking booms and color bursts are in my near future.

On the other hand, Transient Culinary Institute has a nice ring, and the definition could be broadened. "What is Fjord cooking?" "With a name like Goddard, it better go high"

    She brews mead?

Speaking of chemists who brew things, I seem to recall you mentioning that someone gave a senior chem seminar talk about brewing stuff. What did you do for you talk?

If you need an additional chemist to assist with booms and color bursts...
actually expect I'll have some projects in this direction after moving.
Think I will have much time for all my projects soon.
