Seems like the theme of the day is longterm relationships. With some interesting (1) discussions (2) (trurl, unlock your entry!). So for today's update, I attempt to invite anyone who reads my entries and not necessarily my friends to join the fun.

What do you think about marriage? :7

Oops. Sorry. I was bit conflicted about how to classify that particular entry. I guess erred on a bit on the too restrictive side. Bah. Now that Dan has made an issue of it I guess I will make it fully public.

dmv, Destroyer of Privacy? Now that, apparently, livejournal has levels of access, there should be an easy way to tell what privacy mode has been invoked for a given message. Not that I would really use such a thing, but it might be convenient to know "how private"... and perhaps, what set of friends is included.

Not sure of the best mechanism. Maybe a couple of different colored locks, and if you go to the profile page, it will provide a key to which set includes whom (with, perhaps, label?). Of course, it would only show the locks for which the user is a part of. Perhaps that suggestion should be passed on to the Powers That Be. If so inclined, please do so.

Well, sometimes when I'm being more stupid than usual, or want to protect the innocent, I prefer to further restrict the audience.

It might be useful to allow those people in a certain "Friends Group" to know that they are a member, but I am not sure whether it would necessarily a good idea in all cases for them to know who else is a member of the group. I think it would be acceptable to make this an option when the group is created.

On the whole I think there should be more flexibility in what information a user can choose to divulge or not. Right now there is no way to find out what "Friends Group" a person has, even if they don't mind people knowing about certain groups. On the other hand, it would also perhaps be handy some times to have "Friends Group"s that subsets of your "Friends", etc. I know there has been talk of a livejournal only security level.

I thought you didn't have any female friends?

*sigh* Firstly, it depends which overloaded sense of the word you mean. Secondly, the past comment to which you refer, never said that I "didn't". skamille reads my journal, and comments on occassion. Generally I try to avoid causing offense by claiming to have a deeper relationship than I think I can provide proper evidence to support. Given new data, I will go out on a limb and say that she can be classified under whichever previously mentioned sense that you would like to use.

You're a funny guy, Geoff. I would call you a friend, if it matters at all.

I hope you mean that in a laugh with me, rather than laugh at me sort of way :-) Or did you really mean to say loony?

Thanks. I consider you a friend as well. I was going to say something about the nature of "matters", but I concluded that I was probably thinking too hard as usual.
